Proposed Changes to Election Laws - Privacy Concern

I think this is interesting - take a look at the article and see what perspective you take.

The Chief Electoral Officer is concerned about the government's proposed new changes to election laws that will have, what some people think, the following negative implications for our privacy:

  • 1. Giving parties a copy of all statements of voters who have cast ballots.
  • 2. Letting candidates' representatives examine voters' identification
Basically, the parties do have access to information about their voters - but these changes would mean they could collect the information in a broad, systematic way. One of the concerns raised is that political parties are not subject to privacy laws, and it is unclear as to how the parties would safeguard it.

So what do you think? Is it another unnecessary intrusion into our privacy, or simply an extension of a system that already collects voter information to some degree?
