Teaching Teenagers About Social Media Privacy

A survey by MediaSmart indicated that while Canadian teenagers were concerned about their online privacy, few knew how to protect themselves.
Further, a shocking 68% believed that “if a website simply has a privacy policy, it won’t share their personal information”.

Some schools have noticed the knowledge gap, and have taken measures to educate their students. In the technology class taught at a Winnipeg school, students learn about privacy policies and how to protect themselves in their online activities.

Given the widespread of technologies and the popularity of devices such as smartphones, iPads, and laptops, I feel that this type of education should start much earlier than high school. Further, it should reach out to more vulnerable social groups, such as seniors, who may be at a disadvantage when it comes to technology.
