Readings for January 29th

The readings for next week are:

  1. Chapters 9, 10, 11, 12 from the course text. Although it sounds scary, that is just over 70 pages, and there is no comprehensive exam in the course.
  2. Daniel Solove's article entitled "A taxonomy of privacy", available here. I would read lightly for key concepts and ideas.

Michael will be talking about privacy law on the 29th, and then data protection law on the 5th. I moved around the assignment schedule a bit, so please take a look.

One comment about the assignments:

In previous offerings, this course had a 75% essay (100% for upper year students). We found that this didn't work so well for first year students, since many first years at Osgoode haven't received sufficient instruction in research and writing.

This year's schedule was updated to ameliorate those concerns. We reduced the final essay to 50%, adding writing assignments that take place throughout the term. This allows us to spread out the mark allocation and give you feedback in advance of the final essay deadline. We are also paying more attention to legal research, writing and argumentation.

As Michael may have mentioned, all of the perspectives seminars focus on:

  1. Research and writing.
  2. Obtaining critical perspectives on law through secondary literature (e.g., journal articles)

I hope you find the readings and classroom discussions interesting, but don't forget that final marks are largely determined by your research and writing. Upper year students who wish to revert to a 75% essay should contact us.

Internship opportunities at Harvard's Berkman Center

If you are interested in working at Harvard, take a look at the recent advertisement for internships. JD students from Canada are eligible to apply. There are a few projects dealing with privacy issues.

Privacy Symposium Audio files from Ohio State

Our close neighbours at the Moritz School of Law at Ohio State University recently held a symposium on privacy. The theme of the symposium was "the second wave of global privacy regulation". Audio files of the presentations and panels were conveniently posted online, so please take a look.

Hint: This is a good way to get ideas for papers, since the material at recent conferences is usually cutting edge.

IP Osgoode article about the course

Denise Brundson was kind enough to interview us about our upcoming course at Osgoode. We'd also like to thank Pina D'Agostino for the opportunity. You can find the interview here. The article should give a little more information about your instructors.
