Data Protection in the Physical World

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada recently released its investigation report regarding an incident involving Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that occurred in January 2013.

Over a year ago, a hard drive used for backing up information stored the central computer was misplaced by employees at ESDC. Due to the disappearance of a portable hard drive, the personal information of 583,000 student loan recipients may be at risk.

In class, we often talk about the safety of information stored on our computers or in the cloud. However, this incident should serve as a reminder to us of the importance of the physical storage device we use to carry our information.
